Chicago, Illinois Jul 23, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - The Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Chairman Lee Man-hee), Taekwondo representative team proved their skills again by winning prizes in all events at the 2025 Park Chung-hee Cup International Open Taekwondo Tournament.
The tournament, hosted by the Park Chung-hee Cup Organizing Committee and co-organized by the Gyeongbuk Taekwondo Association and Sangju City Taekwondo Association, featured about 4,200 athletes from 18 countries including South Korea, the United States, and France. It was held from July 18 to 21 at the Sangju Indoor Gymnasium. Events included comprehensive performances, breaking, poomsae (forms), kicking, and sparring, evaluating participants skills in various aspects.
On July 19, 25 Shincheonji team members competed in the individual poomsae category. Despite a short preparation period, they showcased outstanding skills through focused training and perseverance, winning 4 gold, 7 silver, and 14 bronze medals, with every athlete earning a prize.
This event was also noted for enhancing Korea's cultural diplomacy status. The team's performance in an international competition held in the birthplace of Taekwondo left a strong impression on participants.
Gold medalist Lee Jun-wi said, Although we didnt have much training time, I tried to focus as much as possible within the given time, and I am grateful that the effort paid off.
Head coach Kim Deok-hoon said, As this is an international-level competition, many outstanding athletes participated, resulting in a high-level contest. I am proud that our athletes were able to perform steadily. Based on this experience, we will systematically prepare training systems and strategies to participate with more members and improved skills next year.
The Shincheonji team had also won awards at the 2025 Kim Un-yong Cup International Open Taekwondo Tournament held earlier this month in Busan, where all 12 participants earned medals, including 2 first places, 4 second places, and 5 third places.
Additionally, at the 2024 Mungyeong World Taekwondo Hanmadang last year, 5 out of 18 participants from the team won prizes, continuing their track record of strong performances at national and international competitions while maintaining excellent team management.
The Shincheonji Church of Jesus actively promotes talent development and healthy community activities in sports, culture, and arts, and plans to continue contributing to society through sports and promoting healthy lifestyles.
